Freesurfing | Surf Snowdonia

FREESURFING

‘Freesurfing’ at Surf Snowdonia means all surfing done outside of our Surf Academy lessons. Freesurf sessions are available to beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers.

Different areas of our 300-metre lagoon are suitable for different surfer abilities. If you’re not sure where you fit in take a look at the descriptions below or talk to our friendly booking team.

There’s plenty of room for everyone to have fun without feeling crowded. Advanced surfers and Kayakers stay closest to the central pier where the wave is highest. Intermediate surfers take the  waist-high waves towards the outer edges of the lagoon.

Beginner surfers stick to the bays at the corners of the lagoon. The whitewater waves are perfect for learning the basics, building your confidence and just having heaps of fun.

Peak prices are weekends and school holidays, Off Peak at all other times.

BEGINNERS

Before coming for a beginner freesurf we would recommend that you have attended a lesson with a qualified ISA surf instructor. Find out more about our surf lessons here.

Beginners  surf in the bays at the ends of the lagoon. The whitewater waves are perfect for learning the basics of surfing and building your confidence. You can expect to catch up to 20 beginner waves in an hour’s session (a rate of one wave every three minutes). There will be maximum of six surfers in each beginner bay.

Board hire is included in the cost of your session. You can either wear your own wetsuit or hire one from us for £5 per day. Kayakers are not permitted on this wave.

INTERMEDIATE 1

Intermediate 1 is perfect wave for you to progress from the beginner bays. It still has a white water take off which will allow you to catch the wave easily and turns into a green wave as it travels down the lagoon. You could ride your first green wave, and improve your wave riding skills.

This wave is appropriate for you if you already have some surfing experience and competency in the following basic skills:

  • Knowledge of your surf equipment
  • Correct wipe-out action
  • Good board control & stopping technique
  • Paddling into whitewater waves unaided
  • Good consistent take off
  • Initiate turning left and right

During your freesurf session there will be maximum of one other surfer on the wave with you. Longer boards or our Softech boards are best suited for this wave.

Board hire is included in the cost of your session, although you can bring your own if you’d prefer. You can either wear your own wetsuit or hire one from us for £5 per day. Kayakers are not permitted on this wave.

INTERMEDIATE 2

Intermediate 2 is a great stepping stone to the advanced wave. Taking off by the pier where the wave is smaller allows you to catch and drop into a wave. This wave runs down the centre of the lagoon, parallel to the advanced wave. These are white water waves which allow you to have a much longer ride than the beginner bays.

This wave is appropriate for you if you already have some surfing experience and have the basic surfing skills shown below:

  • Knowledge of your surf equipment
  • Correct wipe-out action
  • Good board control & stopping technique
  • Paddling into white water waves unaided

Board hire is included in the cost of your session. You can either wear your own wetsuit or hire one from us for £5 per day. Kayakers are not permitted on this wave.
